CHOIR
The number of choirs and the focus for each choir varies from year to year depending on the number of students and their vocal talent. They meet on a weekly bases to learn choral and performance skills. Regular performances are in front of the school and at special events. Students must pass an audition to be part of these choirs. In the past we have won ‘Best Intermediate School Choir’ and ‘Best Test Piece’, and in 2010 we won the "Silver Award" at Kids Sing which is a National Choral Competition.

In 2011 the choirs form part of the musical production together with orchestral ensembles.
DRAMA
Drama is a very big part of our school. It is encouraged through classroom activities and major musical and drama productions. Past school productions have included ‘Wizard of Oz’, ‘Oliver’,‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat’,URE ‘Three Meals a Day’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, ‘TimeTrap’, ‘Bugsy Malone’ and ‘Seussical the Musical’.

We have also participated successfully in Smokefree Stage Challenge. In 2008 we were placed second overall in the secondary section of competition. In 2010 we were the only participating intermediate school against very strong competion from the local High Schools and we received the Excellence Award for Concept. They really stepped up to put on some amazing performances.
MUSIC
Heretaunga Intermediate provides a wide range of musical and cultural activities. All students are given the opportunity to develop and extend their talents with emphasis on singing, instrumental activities, listening activities and musical knowledge. In weekly music slots all students learn keyboard, ukulele, music theory and history. For enthusiastic students, opportunities are available for School Orchestra, the Rock Band and being part of a choir. Instrumental tuition is offered in Drums, Guitar, Violin, Brass, Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet. Students are also involved in song writing and composition. Mac computers play an important part in the music programme with composition being carried out either directly on these or through the use of electronic music keyboards connected to the computers.
HERETAUNGA ACADEMY OF PERFORMANCE ARTS
A music enrichment program that provides students with opportunities to develop their theoretical knowledge and practical abilities in a chosen area of strength.
This programme is based around the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music with theory exams at levels of individual students needs including AURAL - dictation through to NCEA Level 1 and practical group and solo performances.
ART
This programme is designed to build on and extend students’ basic art skills. We have an attractive, well-equipped room that features a print workshop with two presses. Students have the opportunity to work with an artist in residence each year and to take part in exhibitions, workshops and extension classes.

KAPA HAKA
This group meets once a week with tutors from the Takitimu Performing Arts Trust. They learn waiata, dance and performance skills. They regularly perform to the school and at public events and represent the school with pride in the Kapa Haka uniform which is black and blue. There are opportunities for students to lead in this area including playing the guitar and taking a lead role in school wide performances.

PASIFIKA
A vibrant group who meet weekly to learn songs and dance appropriate to the Pasifika culture and includes a Cook Island group. They have a professional tutor and regularly perform at school and public events. The attire worn at performances is blue and white, reflecting a strong and proud group of students.
