Difference
We currently offer character classrooms catering for students with strengths, abilities or learning interests outside the programme offered in other home rooms. Character classrooms available are Apple Mac, Windows Digital, E Learning, Language Enrichment, Eco –Literacy, Thinkshop, PE and Health, girls only, boys only, Global Cultures.
WINDOWS DIGITAL AND APPLE DIGITAL CLASSROOMS
These classrooms operate where students’ learning is carried out and supported through ready access to desktop and laptop computers. The base of their programme is facilitated and implemented through the medium of the computer.
THINKSHOP
The focus of this character classroom is to target the Thinking Curriculum through integrating problem solving and thinking strategies skills into real life contexts.
GLOBAL CITIZENS
The focus of the programme is looking at past and present cultures of the world, languages, social customs, future direction for the planet and creating global citizens through integrating these concepts through all core subjects.
BOYS ONLY
The programme is designed to equip boys with the knowledge and skills to lead healthy lives in a manner relevant to their learning style. Alongside the curriculum they will integrate food and nutrition, mental health, sport studies, outdoor education, body care, physical activity and physical safety.
GIRLS ONLY
A classroom designed to allow for girls to be greater risk takers in their learning who will rise to challenges and experience success.
SPORTS AND HEALTH
A focus on sports theory and practical components of games while learning the value of a healthy lifestyle. They will learn alongside knowledge, skills, rules and regulations, positions and motor skills, umpiring and fair play.
UPBEAT - ARTS ENRICHMENT
This class is designed for those students who have an interest in music. Music will be integrated into as many curriculum areas as possible. One era of music history will be studied each term including the culture and lifestyle of that time. Students learn some basic notation and apply this to piece appreciation activities.
ECO LITERACY
Integrating horticulture, sustainability, pollution, recycling, social and global issues, endangered animals and global warming through their core subjects. The classroom will have special responsibilities for the school composting systems, worm farm, recycling and vegetable gardens.
BLUES AWARDS
The Heretaunga Intermediate Blues Awards is a badge scheme which provides students with the challenge to make the most of the opportunities provided at our school and to be recognised for these achievements. Students work their way through the badges, gathering points for their involvement and for achieving excellence in four areas - Sport, Culture and Arts, Citizenship and Academic at three levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold. A metal Blues Lapel Pin with the school crest and motto is awarded to students who have earned enough points for a second Gold in an area they already have a Gold badge in. Heretaunga Intermediate Honours Badges are awarded to students who have received three Gold badges, in any of the four areas and who have had an interview with the Principal providing a CV of their involvement and achievements.
